In a news release posted to social media, officers from the park district say they, along with Springfield, Leland Grove, and Jerome Police responded to Washington Park just before noon Wednesday after a report of a kidnapping attempt was called in.

Officers investigated, and the suspect — Vontrez Haynes, 24 — was arrested in the 2000 block of Barberry.  He was taken to the Sangamon County Jail on charges of Unlawful Restraint, Aggravated Battery of a Juvenile, Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, and Disorderly Conduct.  He also faces charges in separate cases of Retail Theft and Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer.

It’s not clear when Haynes will appear in court, as formal charges have yet to be filed.
