Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The only Massey on the Sonya Massey commission says perhaps there should be more Masseys. Sontae Massey, the cousin of the woman killed by police last year, said, “My family sent me here to leave this commission and take our name with it,” adding they did so “because of what’s going on in this city.” Sontae Massey said the commission’s work “doesn’t amoun to a hill of beans. I know that’s exactly how my family feels.”

Last July, a then-deputy, Sean Grayson, shot and killed Massey after she called 9-1-1 to her home. He is charged with murder but claims self-defense.

Public comment included assertions that Sheriff Paula Crouch and Sangamon County board chair Andy Van Meter showed a lack of character by not showing up Monday, that police edit and alter bodycam video, that every Sangamon County sheriff is history is a “rotten-ass person who didn’t do nothing but lock up n*ggers,” and that Crouch – a longtime Springfield cop who retired as a lieutenant – is now on an SPD “do not hire” list. Chief Ken Scarlette told WTAX News in a text message that no such list exists.

Tonight the county board votes on a proposed $10 million settlement with the Massey family.
