Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – It was already June 1 by the time the Illinois General Assembly adjourned its spring session. And three of the four legislative leaders put aside their differences in their valedictory remarks early Sunday.
“We’ll be back when the world requires us to be back,” said Senate President Don Harmon (pictured, lower left) (D-Oak Park), “but for the next weeks or months, the world is safe, because the General Assembly is not in session.”
“Everyone here works very professionally, and that is so incredibly important,” said Senate Minority Leader John Curran (pictured, upper left) (R-Downers Grove). “You leave the politics to the amateurs, so thank you.”
“I’m proud of the work we’ve done together. I’m proud of the staff on both sides of the aisle: Democrats and Republicans,” said House Speaker Chris Welch (pictured, lower right) (D-Hillside). “Because despite the rhetoric, we do a lot of great things together.”
“Unfortunately, this session was much of the same: decisions made behind closed doors,” said House Minority Leader Tony McCombie (pictured, upper right) (R-Savanna). “And for the first time since I’ve been elected leader, there was not a meeting with the governor, Speaker Welch, or any of the leaders to discuss the budget package.”
Lawmakers have not scheduled a fall veto session, nor are they counting out the possibility of the legislature convening this summer.
