Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – There is light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak.

Michelle Ownbey, publisher of the Springfield Business Journal, updated the WTAX Morning Newswatch on the progress of Springfield’s rail relocation project.

“In January, they are beginning the final phase of this project, and that will be the underpass at Carpenter and Tenth Street.

“There’s new underpasses that have popped up all over town, new bridges as well, but this last one will be pretty significant,” she said. “They’re doing a lot of work already on North Grand, doing a lot of the water main work and utility work and things like that. The section is closed off where Robin Roberts Stadium is located they will keep a portion of North Grand, and that will become an access road for the stadium, but then they will have the overpass itself, and the 19th Street tracks will be rerouted directly north,” bisecting the former Illinois EPA building and joining the Third Street tracks at Converse Street.
