Springfield, IL (WAND) – The Springfield Lucky Horseshoes and the Springfield Park District continue to battle over what to do with Robin Roberts Stadium, the home of the ‘Shoes.
The stadium is controlled by the Park District, but the team wants it to be transferred to a non-profit organization called “Friends of Robin Roberts Stadium,” which is controlled by the team, citing a lack of upgrades and repairs.
“I don’t think any of the issues have been addressed,” said Lucky Horseshoes Chief Storyteller Jamie Tool. “I mean, there’s real safety concerns with the field.”
Park District board members are skeptical that repair requests are being made.
Tool says that if the team had control over the stadium, repairs could be made.
“We have a great group of folks with ‘Friends of Robin Roberts Stadium.’ They have a vision. Most importantly, we’re not asking for $1 in taxpayer money,” Tool told WAND News following Wednesday night’s board meeting. “We have a vision for programming that facility. There’s tons of youth organizations that want to rent it.”
Thielen says it is not as simple as handing the stadium over to the team.
“The Park District is not allowed to negotiate with the Horseshoes, per se, for the transaction,” he said. “We have to negotiate and transfer the property to the city, and the city would be the one having to do a negotiation and agreement with the Horseshoes.”
The two sides are in agreement that they want to eventually get a deal done.
“If the stipulations are met or we can negotiate the stipulations to where we feel the taxpayers are represented, then yes, absolutely. This board would probably be a unanimous vote to do the transfer,” Thielen said.
Robin Roberts Stadium has been under the control of the park district for over 20 years.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the stadium’s opening.
