Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Comedian Chris Rock says Black people have numerous white friends, while white people have … one Black friend.

Mosaic Partnerships, a group which promotes race relations through increased interracial friendships, made a presentation Monday to the Sonya Massey Commission. Massey was a Black woman in Springfield who was killed by a then-sheriff’s deputy who now faces murder charges.

Anthony Hamilton (pictured), a Springfield volunteer with the group, told the commission, “We want you to actually start getting involved in each other’s networks. Our networks make or break us, right? It’s how we grow, it’s how we get promotions, it’s how we get income.”

Commissioner Sunshine Clemons, leader of the local Black Lives Matter group, is skeptical.

“I’m struggling to see how this will create systemic change by one person having one additional good friend in their life,” Clemons said. “It feels more like it would potentially create an opportunity for exceptionalism versus systemic change.”

Mosaic already operates in Springfield but wants to do much more – at $250,000 a year for each of the first two years, before locals take over the program.
