Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Bruiser is a 6-year-old Retriever mix with a big frame, a big heart, and an even bigger capacity for love. After nearly a year in the shelter, he’s more than ready for a calm home where he can relax and shine.
Shelter life can be overwhelming for him, and struggles with stress and anxiety in his kennel — but outside, he’s much more of himself: calm, affectionate, housebroken, fun, and eager to connect. He’s on anxiety medication and a special allergy diet, both of which he’s doing great with.
Bruiser knows how to sit, catches treats mid-air, and enjoys a balance of chill time and playful moments. He’s working on managing his excitement, especially in busy environments, and would thrive with someone patient and understanding.
He’s looking for a home with no kids and no other pets, where he can have consistency, walks, love, and room to decompress.
Bruiser is available as a permanent foster, meaning the shelter covers food, medication, and resources if needed — you simply give him the home and heart he’s been waiting for. Although, we’re holding onto hope that someone will choose to adopt Bruiser and show him the brighter life and happy ending he’s been waiting for.
A quote from Bruiser’s Homeward Helpers (volunteers):
“Bruiser loves to walk and explore with us. He makes great eye contact and his beautiful brown eyes with his smile of anticipation as to what comes next is contagious! He is social with adults and often within minutes of meeting a new person he will ask for belly rubs. We love that he trusts people, loves to walk on a leash with us and he absolutely adores treats! He loves going shopping at dog friendly stores, especially the dog treat aisle.”
Come meet him at the Animal Protective League, 1001 Taintor Road in Springfield. Open daily from noon–5 p.m.
