Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – More than 130 University of Illinois Springfield students canvassed area neighborhoods on Sunday for the annual Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods event. Their efforts resulted in 9,074 pounds of donated food and grocery items to help feed hungry families and individuals through the Central Illinois Foodbank.

The foodbank supplies food pantries, soup kitchens, residential programs and after-school programs across a 21-county area.

Of the 10 UIS teams participating in the drive, Leadership for Life took first place followed by a joint effort of Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Kappa Alpha, who brought in the most pounds collected per person.

A food drive was also held on campus at the UIS Cox Children’s Center’s Trunk-or-Treat event and brought in 944 pounds of food for the UIS Cares Food Pantry. The pantry helps UIS students facing food insecurity.
