Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Our news partners at WAND-TV report the mother of Daniel Garza, Kristin Griffin, is charged with criminal neglect of a person with a disability and endangering the life or health of a child.

The stepfather of the 16-year-old was indicted Thursday by a Sangamon County Gran Jury on multiple counts, including First Degree Murder. The indictment alleges Steven Garza failed to provide adequate food or water and caused blunt force injuries to the boy that led to his death February 7th.

The Griffins took the boy to the emergency room where he was found unresponsive, not breathing, with a body temperature of 86 degrees and a weight of 94 pounds. Garza was transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, then to Indianapolis for specialized care where he later died.

The couple has also been charged on multiple child sexual abuse counts in connection with an unrelated case involving a 16-year-old Springfield girl.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser, the family moved to Springfield from Washington state in November of last year, and have been living in hotels.
