Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Moving Pillsbury Forward announced Thursday the project has been awarded the full $2,652,300 it applied for through the EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant Program. The group reports it now has the resources to fully clean up the remaining environmental hazards at the site of the former Pillsbury plant on East Phillips Avenue in Springfield.

MPF expects the required government reviews of the remediation and demolition plan to be finished in the coming weeks. Large-scale site activities will likely begin in the fall.

Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher said, “This funding will be instrumental in revitalizing the former Pillsbury plant, a site with a history in grain milling, manufacturing, and warehousing operations from 1929 to 2001. This 18-acre complex holds tremendous potential for our community.”

MPF gives credit to its many community partners along with lawmakers and citizens who have shown they care about health and safety, social and environmental justice, and moving the whole community forward economically.
