Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – 60 immigrants raised their right hands and swore allegiance to the United States of America thereby becoming naturalized citizens.

The newly renovated Old State Capitol served as the backdrop for the ceremony on Wednesday which was presided over by U.S. District Judge Colleen Lawless.

She told the assembled that welcoming new citizens was one of the most gratifying duties of her office.

Mayor Misty Busher spoke from the very spot where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous House Divided speech.

She said she wanted the people to bring the traditions, customs and memories of their former homes and make that a part of the American tapestry.

The Springfield Lawyers Chorus has welcomed people with patriotic songs since 1987. They sang selections including God Bless America, The Star-Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful.

Sadia Khalil is a data scientist from Pakistan who spent 8 years and over 18 thousand dollars to become a citizen, but she said it was worth it because her son was born here and she wanted to share in his allegiance to America. She says everything she has she owes to her new country.
