Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident involving a Union Pacific freight train striking a pedestrian in the 4100 block of Ostermeier Road Friday evening. The Chatham Fire Department, Chatham Police Department, Pawnee Police Department and Auburn Police Department also responded to the scene.

According to interviews with Union Pacific employees, the freight train was travelling southbound when they observed a man lying on the west side of the railroad tracks. The train was unable to stop before striking the man lying on the railroad tracks. The 25-year-old man from Springfield, was dead when found by first responders. The Sangamon County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. This accident remains under investigation.
