Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – UPDATED (7/8) – Preliminary autopsy reports indicate 36-year-old Sonya Massey of Springfield died from a gunshot wound. Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed Massey was transported by EMS from her residence in the 2800 block of South Hoover Avenue and was confirmed dead at 1:47 a.m. Saturday morning at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. An investigation by Illinois State Police and the coroner’s office is ongoing.

(7/6) The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office has requested Illinois State Police conduct an independent investigation into a Saturday morning deputy-involved shooting in the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue in Springfield.

Information released by the county indicates deputies were dispatched to the residence around 12:50 a.m. following a 911 call reporting a prowler. Two deputies conducted a search of the area upon arrival and at approximately 1:21 a.m. reported shots had been fired, resulting in a female being struck by gunfire.

First aid was administered until EMS arrived. The woman was transported to St. John’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. No deputies were injured during the incident.
