(CAPITOL CITY NOW) — A Pleasant Plains man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a New Berlin woman on Interstate 72 late Saturday evening.

Illinois State Police report Robert W. Butcher, 65, was arrested Monday. He has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal traffic crash, a Class 1 felony.

The incident occurred near the eastbound New Berlin exit on I-72 near milepost 82.5. According to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon, the victim, 35-year-old Maysa Davis of New Berlin, was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary autopsy results indicate she died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in a pedestrian-versus-vehicle incident.

A New Berlin Police Department officer discovered Davis after she had been struck. The vehicle involved fled before law enforcement arrived. ISP special agents later identified Butcher as the driver.

Butcher was taken into custody and transported to the Sangamon County Jail.
