Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Summer’s coming, and pop-up parties are already here.

Springfield city council Tuesday passed a penalty of $10,000 or the cost of enforcement from the organizer or promoter of such parties.

Police chief Ken Scarlette (pictured) sets the scene:

“Just this past Saturday was one of the worst block parties,” Scarlette told aldermen. “Thirteenth and Edwards area. Our officers were estimating close to 600-1,000 people out there. A vehicle went speeding through and nearly struck four of our officers, who had to dive out of the way. That vehicle did strike two pedestrians, ultimately crashed. Our officers got a gun and cocaine out of the car. There were also multiple gun arrests throughout the evening.”

Scarlette said the pop-up parties cost the city more than $200,000 in police overtime last year- and this year could be similar.
