Chicago, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raul says a federal injunction against an executive order by President Trump allegedly targeting a law firm is a victory.
On Friday, a judge’s permanent injunction against the executive order involving Jenner & Block was issued, with the judge claiming that the order was retaliatory in nature. It once employed Andrew Weissman, once a prosecutor who work on a team led by special counsel Robert Mueller looking into ties during the 2016 election involving Trump and Russia. The judge said the order was meant to “chill representation the administration doesn’t like, thereby insulating the Executive Branch from the judicial check fundamental to the separation of powers.”
Raoul is one of a number of state Attorneys General who filed briefs encouraging the blocking the order.
“I am pleased the court recognized that this executive order is blatantly unconstitutional and has barred the Trump administration from enforcing it,” said Raoul, in a news release. “Allowing a U.S. President to punish law firms based on who they employ or represent is not only unconstitutional, but it is also a dangerous step towards authoritarianism. This effort to silence dissent by depriving access to counsel violates First Amendment rights, right to counsel principles and undermines the rule of law.”
A number of other law firms have been targets of similar executive orders by President Trump. Raoul says he encourages those other firms to “stand strong in the face of intimidation and threats by the Trump administration.”
