Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – In just two weeks, your driver’s license will have to be REAL ID compliant to work for boarding a domestic flight.

According to our news partners at WAND TV, starting May 7, U.S. travelers will be required to have a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights.

In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to fight terrorism and reduce identity fraud. REAL ID is a driver’s license or other form of state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets the minimum-security standards set forth by the federal government.

To become REAL ID compliant for the first time, you must go in-person to a state-approved office. A Class E driver’s license can be renewed up to 12 months prior to the card’s expiration date.

Correction:  The original story has been updated to reflect that a Class E driver’s license can be renewed up to 12 months prior to the card’s expiration date instead of 18 months prior to the expiration.
