(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Remnants of Hurricane Beryl are expected to bring heavy rain, high winds, severe storms and flooding from south-central Illinois into parts of lower Michigan. Sangamon, Christian, and Logan counties are among the counties under a flood watch until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Two to three inches of rain is likely in the area centered between I-55 and I-57, with 1 to 2 inches south of I-70. However, locally heavier amounts are possible.
“Stay alert by monitoring the local news and weather reports this week as severe weather moves through the area,” said FEMA Region 5 Regional Administrator Tom Sivak. “Flooding doesn’t just have the potential to cause costly damage, it can also be life threatening. Being prepared can save your life and give you peace of mind.”
Preparation Tips from FEMA:
- Stay Informed: Follow directives from local and state officials, sign up for community warning systems, and use the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and NOAA Weather Radio for alerts. Familiarize yourself with local siren warnings.
- Ensure Power Backup: Charge mobile devices fully and have alternative power sources like portable chargers or power banks. Equip each household member with a flashlight.
- Gather Essential Supplies: Prepare an emergency kit, including medications and pet needs.
- Develop a Communications Plan: Ensure everyone knows where to go, what to do, and how to reconnect after the disaster.
- Safety Precautions: Avoid fallen power lines and trees and report them immediately. Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.
