Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – “We need justice and accountability.” Those are the words of U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski referring to the Sonya Massey case.

Does that mean she feels Sheriff Jack Campbell should step down? “I think there are hard questions to be answered. I think the sheriff attending the community meeting was a good step in the right direction.” Budzinski said she is still looking to see more information before she would personally call on him to resign.

The Congresswoman made her remarks at Lincoln Land Community College Wednesday after highlighting an $8 million federal grant for youth apprenticeships to address the workforce shortage.

“I think we’re now at a place where we need to do some investigations into how this police officer got onto the police force.” She said she plans to partner with local, state and federal officials to look closely at the situation and mentioned the Department of Justice has begun their investigation.

Budzinski said the legislation she is focused on is about de-escalation and getting officers the skills training they need. She also doesn’t support no-knock warrants and choke holds, which are items in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Massey was shot by Sean Grayson in her home on July 6. Grayson was one of two deputies responding to a 911 call of a prowler.
