Riverton, IL  (CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS) -Riverton High School has announced the cancellation of the 2024 varsity football season. In a press release, Activities Director Katie Nichols stated that the decision was made “due to low participation numbers and to ensure the safety of our student-athletes.”

Nichols added that the school plans to continue with the JV season to strengthen the program, with the aim of resuming varsity football in 2025. All schools in the Sangamo Conference and the IHSA have been notified and are, according to Nichols, supportive of this decision.
