Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – It’s a required process for Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray. Every two years, he must update voter registration records to make sure they’re accurate, and voters aren’t able to vote illegally. Gray talks about it with Will Stevenson on the WTAX Morning Newswatch.
Gray explains that every registered voter is mailed a Voter ID card. In theory, if the voter receives their card, then the information is accurate. If the card is returned to the elections office, the clerk’s office then takes the steps necessary to correct that information in their system. Gray states that accurate and accountable voter rolls are the core foundation to smooth and well executed elections.
As for the accusation that dead people are voting in elections, Gray shares that the clerk’s office updates this information in their system daily. The clerk’s office receives data from the State Board of Elections and other jurisdictions of when people pass, but they don’t catch everybody, and sometimes there is a lag in time of processing. So, if you receive the Voter ID card of someone that has passed, Gray asks that you fill out the information on the back of the card and send it back, so the system can be updated. The same goes if you receive a card for someone who is no longer living at that address.
Registered voters can expect to receive their voter ID cards in the mail within the next couple of weeks.
If you need to register to vote, or update your registration, you can give them a call at 217-753-8683, stop into their office, or you can visit the Sangamon County Clerk’s office website.
