With the back-to-school season approaching, ensuring the safety of students, especially around school buses, is crucial. Here are some key safety tips to remember:
For Drivers:
- Watch for School Zones: Be vigilant in school zones and near bus stops.
- Obey the Stop Arm: Stop when the bus extends its stop sign, and its flashing lights are activated. In most states, it’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus.
- Slow Down: Reduce speed when driving in areas where buses are loading or unloading children.
- Stay Alert: Be mindful of children who may suddenly enter the road, especially near bus stops.
- Distance Matters: Maintain a safe following distance behind school buses, giving them plenty of room to stop.
- Flashing Lights.
*Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
*Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.
For Parents:
- Arrive Early: Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
- Stay Back: Children should wait at least three giant steps (six feet) away from the curb.
- Cross Safely: Remind children to always cross in front of the bus, never behind, and make eye contact with the driver before crossing.
- Remind your child that the bus stop is not a place to run or play.
