Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has an economic impact of $1 billion in Illinois. That was among the findings in an impact study released by the SIU System on Thursday. The research, based on fiscal year 2023, found the medical school also generated 5,542 jobs in health care and supporting industries in the state.
The School of Medicine is part of the larger SIU System with campuses in Carbondale, Edwardsville and Springfield. The system as a whole, delivers an economic impact of just under $4 billion. The SIU System Office and SIU School of Medicine are located in Springfield along with SIU clinics servings thousands of patients.
Dr. Jerry Kruse, dean and provost of SIU School of Medicine, emphasized that SIU Medicine’s primary mission is to improve the health of residents in central and southern Illinois. However, he said seeing the organization’s people, jobs, and services positively impact the region and contribute to the overall economic well-being of Illinois is rewarding.
SIU School of Medicine is supported, in part, by state funding. Among the other findings, SIU School of Medicine generated almost $36 million in tax revenues, and its alumni in the workforce had a $188 million impact to the region.
