Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – If you were hoping for a big ‘implosion event’ at the former Pillsbury site you may be a bit disappointed to find out that is not how the buildings will be brought down.

Moving Pillsbury Forward said in a news release they investigated it, but the cost savings were just not there, and the liability concerns were also a big factor in their decision to go with the tried-and-true methods of using a wrecking ball and hydraulic crushers. The reclamation foundation says this method is cost effective and much safer than using dynamite… just not quite as fast.

A big crane was delivered to the Northeast side site last week. It came on several semi-trucks. Officials say the 300,000 lb. machine should be enough to get the job done.

They also say the buildings have now been cleared of an estimated 90% of all remaining asbestos and it’s anticipated that July will be the month when the big demolition begins.

With the paint removed from the silos, they say they can then demolish the silos and recycle an estimated 70,000 tons of concrete.
