Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois Department of Transportation is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other law enforcement agencies to promote the nationwide, “Speeding Catches Up with You” speeding prevention campaign to remind drivers to slow down and to emphasize the importance of safe driving.
IDOT held a media event at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Route 66 Experience on Wednesday morning.
As part of Speed Awareness Day in Illinois, transportation and law enforcement officials discussed the importance of speed reduction and the dangers concerning excessive speed and
driving unbelted on Illinois roadways.
IL Transportation Secretary, Omer Osman, told the assembled media in 2023, 1,241 people were killed in crashes in Illinois and 55% of those deaths were the result of speeding.
Sgt. Jeff Royer who heads the Traffic Enforcement division of the Springfield Police Dept. brought two new Harleys the SPD will use in their efforts to make roadways safer.
He says during the summer months police school safety officers will be reassigned to traffic details during the summer break.
