SPRINGFIELD, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) — Illinois is projected to see over 78,000 new cancer diagnoses in the state this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Tia Rapps, community cancer education coordinator at the Regional Cancer Center at Springfield Memorial Hospital said despite the number of new diagnoses, progress is being made.
“People are living with cancer for a lot longer. They are living better and more productive lives due to advancements in research and early detection from screenings,” Rapps stated. The top three cancers are breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer, all of which have appropriate screenings available.
Rapps addressed a common misconception regarding cancer survivorship. “A person becomes a cancer survivor the moment they receive their diagnosis.” June 2 was National Cancer Survivors Day, a day designated to honor caregivers and survivors, celebrating life and resilience. In recognition, Memorial Health is partnering with the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes for a special event celebrating Springfield cancer survivors and their families. The celebration will take place Sunday at Robin Roberts Stadium.
Attendees will have access to valuable cancer resources and giveaways. Cancer survivors can receive a free ticket to Sunday’s game by calling 217-788-4400 by the close of business on Friday. “It will be a fun night for cancer survivors and their families to connect with resources and be with others who are in the same situation,” Rapps said.
Additionally, Memorial offers monthly cancer support groups to provide health information and support to those affected by cancer. For more information, contact the Regional Cancer Center at Springfield Memorial Hospital at 217-788-4400.
