Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – “History across the Tracks” would tell the story of Black Springfield. Aldermen are scheduled to discuss a potential historic attraction Tuesday night.

Ald. Shawn Gregory, Ward 2, says the more we know about Black history, the better.

“Why Springfield?  Why now?” said Gregory.  “In 2024, the site of the 1908 race riots was declared a national monument, attracting national attention and global tourism potential.  This project will elevate neglected black historic sites into a nationally significant black tourism corridor.”

Supporters say $1.5 million dollars would help get things started to recognize, for example, the Lincoln Colored Home, the Dr. Edwin Lee Ambidextrous House, and Engine House Five.

“National studies show that black cultural site tourists spend about $1,300 per trip and, on average, are more likely to travel for history and cultural significance.  It’s a community-led initiative.  Just a month ago, we approved zoning for the Lincoln Colored Home.”

The City Council is expected to hear more during their discussion Tuesday evening.
