Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Thirty-five homes in Springfield are on the demolition list. The Springfield City Council is set to vote Tuesday on the demo, which will cost approximately $692,000.
Ward 10 Alderman Ralph Hanauer said it’s getting colder, and the risk for squatters taking over the vacant and dilapidated properties increases. Hanauer said Springfield firefighters have been injured battling fires set by squatters trying to stay warm, and he doesn’t want to see more firefighters injured.
Many are beyond repair, would cost too much to repair, and are eyesores in the neighborhoods, according to Hanauer. Removing the structures will allow the lots to be sold and the property returned to the tax rolls, he said. If approved, S. Shafer Excavating will handle demolition.
