Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) -A man who was rescued from Lake Springfield Tuesday afternoon died not long afterward at a local hospital.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon says a 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at 1:43pm.  An autopsy has been scheduled.

Springfield Firefighters including a dive team were called to the lake, in the area of the 400 block of East Lake Shore Drive, prior to 1:00 p.m.  At the time, Springfield Firefighters Local 37 said on their Facebook page that equipment they had recently received called “Rapid Dive” was used by the department as part of the rescue.  According to our news partners at WAND, it’s an air canister that allowed a firefighter to enter the lake in full uniform to perform the rescue.

The union said at the time the use of the equipment helped get the victim back to having a good pulse again before being taken to the hospital for further treatment.  It also was able to be deployed much quicker than use of the full dive team.

Allmon said an autopsy was conducted, and an investigation into the death is continuing by his office and Springfield Police.  The man’s identity isn’t being released until next of kin can be notified.
