Springfield, ILĀ  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – (UPDATE 5/31/24 11:22 a.m.) Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon has identified the motorcyclist who died Thursday as Manfred Schmidt of Springfield. Preliminary autopsy results show Schmidt died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the crash.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon has confirmed a 64-year-old Springfield man is dead after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle Thursday at 8:20 a.m. near the intersection of Mansion and Curran Roads. The motorcyclist was transported by ambulance to Springfield Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:17 p.m. The identity of the deceased is being withheld, pending next of kin notification. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.

Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell’s office says witness information and a driver’s statement indicate the driver of a black GMC Acadia was traveling west on Mansion Road. The motorcycle, a red 2003 Harley Davidson, was traveling south on Curran Road. The GMC proceeded into the intersection striking the motorcycle. The other motorist refused medical care at the scene, and citations have been issued, according to the sheriff’s office.
