Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A Springfield man has been found guilty of attempted murder, home invasion, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated stalking by a Sangamon County jury. Evidence in the case indicated Clarence Hopson stalked, surveilled, and threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend between October and November 2022.

The victim testified Hopson used a cinder block to break the glass door to her home on November 12, 2022. Once inside, she said he cut her throat and chin and slashed her wrist with a box cutter. Court records show Hopson then ran off, and the victim called 911.

The victim received treatment at a location hospital, and the Springfield officers recovered the box cutter at the scene. Testing at the Illinois State Police Crime Lab revealed the victim’s blood on the blade and Hopson’s DNA on the handle.

Records from AT&T, according to the lead detective on the case, showed Hopson’s location at the victim’s home during the attack as well as earlier the same morning. Hopson also reportedly called the victim 39 times and sent numerous text and Facebook messages between 1:00 a.m. and the time of the attack at approximately 5:30 a.m.

After fleeing to Chicago then Las Vegas after the attack, Hopson was eventually apprehended in Colorado. He was extradited back to Illinois. Hopson faces a minimum of 14 years and a maximum of 95 years in prison.  Sentencing is set for October 3.
