Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A Springfield man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug and firearm charges stemming from a 2022 investigation.

Johnnell Smith, 42, received the sentence on Friday for possessing heroin with intent to distribute and for possessing a firearm in while committing a drug crime. Senior U.S. District Judge Sue E. Myerscough handed down the sentence.

The charges stemmed from a search warrant executed at Smith’s residence on Nov. 30, 2022. Investigators found nearly 50 grams of heroin, approximately 160 grams of a heroin-fentanyl mixture, and two firearms. Smith had a prior federal conviction from 2015 for selling heroin.

He was indicted in January 2023 and pleaded guilty in September 2024 to possessing more than 100 grams of heroin with intent to distribute.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Springfield Police Department investigated the case.
