Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – For many high school students, prom is a rite of passage—a night of glamour, celebration, and lasting memories. But for some, the cost of a dress can make attending feel out of reach. Made Wright Inc. is stepping in to change that with its second annual free prom dress giveaway, happening this Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Illinois Education Association building at 3440 Liberty Dr. in Springfield.

Executive Director Tia Mahr said this year’s event is open to middle and high school girls and goes beyond simply providing dresses. The experience has expanded to include valuable life skills workshops and community engagement opportunities. Security Bank will lead a budgeting session to help attendees learn how to manage expenses. Hair and makeup tutorials will offer tips on styling for the big night, while a college and career panel will connect students with professionals who can answer questions about higher education and future job opportunities.

Safety is also a priority, said Mahr. With many prom-goers newly licensed or learning to drive, a female firefighter and a female police officer will be on-site to discuss prom safety, responsible driving habits, and general personal security.

Last year’s event was a success with more than 200 dresses given away. One family traveled from Missouri to participate. Tia Mahr said one dress recipient was so touched by the experience that she reached out this year wanting to volunteer and give back to the event that had helped her.

“It’s definitely heartwarming and rewarding to be able to give back to the community,” said Mahr. The idea for the event came about as the organization was working in the community and noticed a lot of the girls weren’t going to prom. One girl confided in Mahr that financially a prom dress was out of reach.

The dresses for the giveaway are collected through generous community partnerships including GOWNS Bridal and Formal Boutique in Springfield, Kappa Sigma Zeta, and Lincoln Land Community College. Donations are also still being accepted, with drop-offs available the morning of the event from 9 a.m. to noon at the venue.

Girls interested in attending are encouraged to register in advance by emailing madewrightinc@gmail.com to receive priority access to dress selection. On-site registration will also be available.
