Springfield, ILĀ  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – One Springfield police officer was recognized for his quick actions to render aid to a stabbing victim and saving the man’s life. Mayor Misty Buscher, joined by Police Chief Ken Scarlette, honored Officer Keagan Graves with the prestigious Life Saving Award.

The incident occurred on June 20 in the early morning hours near 3075 Normandy Rd., where Graves noticed a disturbance as a large crowd began to disperse, with vehicles fleeing the scene. Moments later, another officer discovered a critically injured stabbing victim. SPD said Graves sprang into action using combat gauze to treat the victim’s wound while keeping the individual calm and reassured despite the severity of the situation.

Paramedics transported the victim to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he underwent extensive treatment and ultimately survived. Medical professionals credited Graves’ prompt and skilled response with saving the victim’s life.

“Officer Graves’ willingness to go above and beyond, his calmness under pressure, and his ability to apply his training when it mattered most are the reasons he undoubtedly deserved this award,” said Police Chief Ken Scarlette.
