Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – One of the lawmakers responsible for building a FY 26 budget for Illinois told reporters Thursday the Illinois General Assembly should meet its deadline.
After May 31, any bill with an immediate effective date needs a sixty percent supermajority, as opposed to a simple majority.
In sharing few details, State Rep. Kam Buckner (pictured, right) (D-Chicago) took a question about Democratic infighting.
“One of the pressures you have with a big tent like ours, is that you have a lot of bureaucratic ideologies and political stances. We got a strong progressive caucus. We got a strong New Democrat Caucus, formerly known as moderates, folks who care about fiscal discipline. Also folks who care about making sure that our vision our values are applied as well. So I’m not worried about it, I know that we have to have more conversations about how we get to the requisite number of votes that we need to pass a budget.”
The budget is expected to be about $55 billion. The fiscal year begins July 1.
