(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – An idea from Gov. JB Pritzker’s State of the State speech got some attention at a Champaign school Thursday. As many school districts – including District 186 in Springfield – have done, he wants a statewide ban on cell phones in the classroom.
“We are all aware of the challenges posed by the inappropriate use of social media in schools,” said Unit 4 superintendent Sheila Boozer. “Our primary goal is to support the social, emotional, and mental well-being of every student.”
In addition to the distraction from academics, the ban’s supporters say cell phones encourage bullying and the spread of disinformation.
The proposal is now in bill form.
