Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois’ Fallen Firefighter Memorial has one new name: that of Cristian Medrano of Aurora, who died in the line of duty in 2024.

“Cristian was so young, so excited about just starting his career, his loss is so unexpected,” said Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza. “Honestly, when you think about it, it’s so unfair. To his mother, his sister, his brother-in-law, his godson, and his niece who he didn’t get to meet: Thank you.”

Mendoza noted the rivalry between police and fire services but added her policeman brother has said, firefighters are here so cops would have heroes, too.
