Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Grant money is helping the Illinois State Police up their game in terms of combating carjacking and vehicle thefts.
ISP says in the second quarter of 2025, 225 vehicles reported stolen and/or hijacked were recovered, resulting in 1,215 assignments for forensics laboratories.

According to ISP, here are some of what they call “highlights of their vehicle recovery efforts:
- April 26, 2025, ISP located a stolen Land Rover and attempted a traffic stop on I-94 southbound at 95th Street in Chicago, but the Land Rover fled. The driver of the Land Rover parked around 83rd and Elizabeth and two occupants ran from the vehicle. ISP took both occupants into custody and recovered a firearm.
- May 3, 2025, ISP located a stolen Kia and attempted a traffic stop in the 400 block of Sauget Avenue in Cahokia, but the Kia fled. The driver of the Kia stopped, and two occupants ran from the vehicle. One occupant was taken into custody.
- June 1, 2025, ISP located a stolen Jeep and attempted a traffic stop on I-94 northbound at 43rd Street in Chicago, but the Jeep fled. The driver of the Jeep parked near Haddon and Kostner and five occupants ran from the vehicle. ISP took all five occupants into custody and recovered a firearm. (Source: Illinois State Police)
ISP says it received a $10 million grant in 2023, $677,000 in 2024, and $637,500 in 2025, all through the Illinois Secretary of State Vehicle Hijacking and Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention and Insurance Verification Council.
