(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – You wouldn’t be surprised to hear Gov. JB Pritzker took questions about tariffs and deportation when he spoke to Illinois reporters Wednesday from his trade mission to Mexico.

“The tariffs seem so broad-based and not well-negotiated or thought out,” said Pritzker, “that they will potentially destroy some businesses in Mexico that U.S. companies rely upon.”

Pritzker noted the auto industry — including auto parts — encompasses all three countries in North America, making tariff calculation complicated when parts move across a border several times before final assembly. He said car buyers can expect to pay an additional $3,000-$15,000 per car.

He said that while he has heard Mexicans’ concerns about deportation, it has not been a dominant subject. Still, the governor said the fear is that people will simply be snatched off American streets and shipped out with no warning and no “opportunity to prove their legal status.”.
