Mattoon, IL (WAND) – Further testing that came in on Saturday showed toxin levels are decreasing in Mattoon’s water supply after an algal bloom made it unsafe to drink.
The City of Mattoon says the IEPA sampled the water on Friday morning. Results show that the water is still contaminated, but levels are lowering.
The city says the water had an algal bloom neurological toxin level of .314 parts per billion level. That is down from .35 parts per billion found in previous testing.
While water treatment has made levels go down, the IEPA recommendation for a do not drink order is .3 parts per billion, so the do not drink order is still in effect.
The city did take more samples that are being sent to an IEPA lab in Springfield for testing. The results are expected Sunday afternoon.
Mattoon is still providing water to residents until 8 p.m. on Saturday at Lytle Park and Williams Elementary School. Water will also be distributed at both locations on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Residents can bring their own containers to Lytle Park for refills. There is a 5 gallon limit, and all containers need a lid.
