Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The answer has not changed, but aldermen continue to press the question: Can Frank Lesko (pictured) serve as Springfield city clerk and Sangamon County recorder simultaneously?

“There’s about 26 pages from the attorney general’s office.” said corporation counsel Greg Moredock. “They will look at each individual conflict, and there has never been an opinion (dealing with the combination of) a city clerk and a county recorder.”

In other words, there is no guidance that the two offices are incompatible.

Alds. Roy Williams and Jennifer Notariano were the council members questioning Moredock Tuesday night.

A local newsman piled on as well. “He is de facto merging these two offices,” said Ronald Hamm of Illinois Eagle, “circumventing public channels he would otherwise be required to take to do so.”

Hamm misstated the offices Lesko wanted to merge, as he campaigned on a promise of “Hire me, so you can fire me.” Lesko suggested merging the county offices of clerk and recorder.

Lesko said he would relinquish the clerk’s office after a discovery recount is settled, which could be as soon as this week.
