Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Two people are dead Monday morning on Interstate 55 in Springfield.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened at 1:02 a.m. Monday on Interstate 55 southbound near the East Lake Shore Drive exit.  The crash involved two vehicles, one of which was going the wrong way.

The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.  A passenger of one of the vehicles was taken to the hospital with injuries.  No other details about the vehicles or those in them have been released.

The roadway reopened around 6:00 a.m. Monday, roughly five hours after the crash.  An investigation into the crash continues.
