Washington, D.C. (CAPITOL NEWS NOW) – The “Big Beautiful Bill” dealing with the federal budget was passed in the U.S. House early Thursday morning along party lines, and that’s being born out into how some of Illinois’ lawmakers voted for it.
Peoria-area Congressman Darin LaHood and the Springfield area’s Mary Miller like it, while Springfield’s Nikki Budzinski doesn’t.
“I was proud to cast my vote in support of President Trump’s One Big, Beautiful Bill,” said Miller (R), in a statement. “The legislation delivers on the America First agenda that a majority of Americans support. It ensures illegals are stripped of federal SNAP benefits, enforces common-sense work requirements for Medicaid, invests in mass deportation efforts, cuts taxes on tips and overtime, and dismantles Biden’s radical Green New Deal policies.”
Miller says she hopes the Senate acts quickly on it.
LaHood (R-Dunlap) says it will help taxpayers, veterans, small businesses, and farmers, among others.
“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is a bold, comprehensive piece of legislation that will create a stronger and more prosperous future for all Americans,” said LaHood. “This bill will bring predictability and certainty by providing much-needed tax relief for Americans, small businesses, farmers, veterans, and seniors. By lowering the tax burden on families and businesses, we are creating an economic environment where they can thrive.”
Budzinski, meanwhile, calls it a handout to the wealthiest Americans, while more than 20,000 people on Medicaid in Illinois stand to lose their benefits.
“The Republican tax package is nothing more than a massive handout to the wealthiest Americans at the expense of everyone else. It unfairly harms the bottom 10 percent of earners while delivering the most benefits to the top 10 percent. It also cuts billions from Medicaid and SNAP, and adds more than $3 trillion to the national debt,” said Budzinski (D-Springfield). “This bill turns its back on working families, meaning while billionaires receive tax breaks, middle class families will instead pay more in annual living expenses. We need middle class tax relief, support for those who need it, and real fiscal responsibility. This bill fails on all counts, which is why I voted NO.”
Budzinski claims thousands of Pell Grant recipients will also lose their money.
