Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A Springfield man was arrested after his 2-year-old daughter was struck by a bullet through her bedroom wall. Last Thursday, 34-year-old Averill F. McDonald took his daughter to HSHS St. John’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to her leg and a graze wound to her head. Springfield police responded to the hospital for a report of a shooting victim.
After investigating a home in the 3300 block of East Enos Avenue, police report a bullet hole was found in the bathroom wall that led into a bedroom, and blood was found on the bed. Two 9mm firearms and ammunition were located in the bathroom of the residence. Investigators determined the child had been laying on the bed when she was struck by the bullet.
McDonald is believed to have fired the gun and was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, unlawful possession of ammunition, reckless discharge of a firearm, endangering the life or health of a child, and defacing identification marks on a firearm. On Monday, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office petitioned that McDonald remain in custody. The petition was denied, and McDonald was released from custody.
