Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Students who transfer to the University of Illinois Springfield will soon get some of the same financial incentives as first-year students.

According to a news release, UIS says it will expand its “Prairie Promise” program.  It fully covers of tuition and fees for what they call “qualified first-time, first-year undergraduate students.”

Eligible students, according to UIS:

  • Must be Illinois residents admitted to an on-campus undergrad program demonstrate under FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or the Illinois Alternative Application
  • Must also meet Illinois MAP Grant program eligibility (MAP)
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student.

“Expanding the Prairie Promise to transfer students makes a college education even more accessible, regardless of financial need,” said Janet Gooch, UIS chancellor, in a news release. “This expansion demonstrates our commitment to breaking down financial barriers and supporting all Illinois students who want to earn a high-quality education at UIS.”

The expansion of the “Prairie Promise” program takes place with the Fall, 2026 semester, but students must apply for admission and for financial aid by May 1, 2026.

The “Prairie Promise” program was launched in October, 2023.
