Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A new walking path around the campus of Springfield Memorial Hospital is officially open.

It’s being called the “Memorial Mile” — and it’s open to anyone, especially those who use Memorial’s services.

Dr. Nicole Florence, Medical Director of Memorial Wellness Center, tells the WTAX Morning Newswatch walking a mile can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

“Especially for people who are just getting started, they may be a little, kind of, ‘I don’t know how far I can do, or how fast,'” said Florence.  “So it’s important to map it out.  It’s safe.  It’s a smooth walkway.”

Florence says the course is already mapped out for you, so you can establish how far you can go.

“We have it marked off from Carpenter Street, down Rutledge, over to Calhoun, and up First Street. It’s kind of a large rectangle that surrounds our campus,” said Florence. “But, also, you’ll notice you see SIU across the street. Also, we have Springfield Clinic on the other side.”

Florence says she hopes medical professionals especially are able to take a break and get out and walk. However, it’s open to anyone, including caregivers who may just need time to themselves.

“Those folks need a break. They need fresh air, a little sunshine. That’s good for your mental health, to de-stress,” said Florence. “This way, they know that they have a safe place where you can walk, and also be near our campus if need be.”

Florence says it’s also good to use if you’re in a wheelchair or use a walker.

If you’re not much of a walker, she suggests starting out slow, maybe use part of the path, and keep building up every time you go.
