Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Over the next month, residents in the southeast region of Springfield may notice work crews surveying areas near roadways. City Water, Light and Power’s contractor, McKim & Creed, will be conducting a leak detection survey on water mains in the area east of I-55 and southeast of I-72.
Technicians will use acoustic devices to inspect around 113 miles of water main for leaks. This annual survey, launched in 2008 as part of CWLP’s water conservation efforts, has helped reduce water loss significantly. So far, the program has covered Springfield’s 740-mile water system three times, locating and repairing 447 hidden leaks and saving an estimated 2.1 million gallons of water per day.
After the survey, CWLP crews will complete any necessary repairs.
