Smollett, who is Black and gay, told police in January 2019 that two men assaulted him in his downtown Chicago neighborhood, spouting slurs, tossing a noose around his neck, and yelling that he was in “MAGA country.”

Police say the murder investigation required extensive department resources and involved collaboration with federal and state agencies.

The two teens engaged in the physical altercation failed to stop after multiple commands from the officer.
