Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Additional charges may be filed against a former Springfield police sergeant, pending toxicology report results, related to a Thursday crash. The collision happened in the 400 block of East Lake Shore Drive around 9:21 p.m. and left a motorcyclist and his passenger seriously injured, according to the Illinois State Police.
ISP reports 50-year-old Michael Egan was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way when he made a left turn, and the motorcycle collided with the side of Egan’s 2018 Toyota Tundra.
The motorcyclist and passenger were ejected from the bike and transported to a local hospital by EMS. Illinois State Police confirm they have contacted the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding the incident.
In a press release put out Friday afternoon, Springfield police indicate officers arriving on the scene rendered aid to the injured, closed the roadway and assisted other first responders on the scene. Approximately 10 minutes after arriving, SPD reports officers identified the driver of the Tundra as retired sergeant Egan. At that time, ISP was contacted to conduct the crash and DUI investigation.
In an effort to maintain transparency and accountability, SPD Chief Ken Scarlette said an internal investigation is underway in the department to ensure all policies and procedures were followed at the scene. “Both active and retired law enforcement officers must be held to the same standards to maintain public trust and uphold the integrity of the Springfield Police Department.”
