Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Ensuring that low-income residents have access to phone and broadband services is at the core of a new initiative. The Illinois Commerce Commission, Federal Communications Commission, National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners are highlighting this need during “Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week,” running from Sept. 8-14. The program aims to boost awareness about the FCC’s Lifeline program, which provides discounts to help eligible residents afford these services.

ICC Chairman Doug Scott emphasized the importance of these services, stating, “Whether it’s to call 911, access healthcare services, or connect with loved ones, access to phone and broadband services is critical for all Illinoisans.”

Participants in certain public assistance programs or those who meet income criteria can receive a discount of up to $9.25 per month for broadband or bundled services, up to $5.25 for voice-only service, and up to $34.25 per month for residents of eligible Tribal lands.
